How to replace the display in an Amazon Kindle Touch

Broken Kindle screen?

EPAPERPROJECTS shows you how to easily take apart your Kindle Touch and replace the screen.

You will need:
A plastic prying tool, flat tool or spudger.
A small phillips head screwdriver.

A replacement Kindle Touch E-Ink Screen (ED060SCG)

and a hairdryer (optional)

Step 1: Remove Back Panel

Use the prying tool to unclip the bottom half of the back panel.

Slide halfway up both sides to remove the side clips.

The top half fasteners are not clips, but slide grooves, so simply slide the back panel backwards to remove from the device.

Step 2: Unscrew battery
There are 5 Phillips head screws keeping the battery in place. Remove and place to one side

Tip: Think ahead and make the reassembly easier by making separate piles of components & screws for each step. There are a variety of screws, and they can be a nightmare if they are kept in one big pile.

Step 3: Remove 3G Module
The 3G version of the Kindle Touch has a circuit board here, whereas the Wifi version as pictured simply has a piece of dummy plastic.
There are 4 small screws holding in the 3G Module. Use a 00 size Phillips head screwdriver for best fit.

NOTE: If you have the 3G model, there may have to unplug an antenna here as well.

Step 4: Remove Front Panel

There are 6 screws on the edge of the assembly. These hold the front panel on. Remove these and set to one side.

Flip it to the front.

There are clips on the top edge and bottom edge of the front panel. You can unclip these with your prying tool.
The front panel is also held on with adhesive, but is very flexible, so if you gently get underneath and lever it up with your tools or hands, it should come right off.
If you are having problems, using a hairdryer to soften up the glue here can be useful.

Again, be aware of the clips on the top and bottom edges, these simply have to be levered off at the correct angle.

Step 5: Remove Frame
Removing the front panel will reveal a further 6 screws. 2 on either side of the main button, 2 in the bottom corners, and 2 in the top. Collectively, these fasten the electronics and screen assembly to the plastic Kindle frame.

Screws from underneath the front panel, holding frame.

The electronics assembly should then lift out. Flip it over for the next step.

Step 6: Detach wires

There are 4 connections to be detached in total.

There are 2 speaker wires on either side of the bottom of the motherboard. You can put the screwdriver under the wire to gently flick them off from their connectors.

Next, the ribbon cable for the screen. You can remove this with your fingers. Take note of the part code for the screen - ED060SCG.

Up at the top, there is an antenna wire to be removed.

Step 7: Remove Antenna

There are 3 screws holding in the antenna. Remove these.

Use the prying tool to unstick the antenna from its perch.

Step 8: Remove Screen Assembly

By now, the only thing holding the black screen assembly onto the main board are a number of side clips.
Carefully separate these using your prying tool.

Flip the screen ribbon up, and it should slide out of a slot.

Step 9: Replace E-Ink Screen

The display is attached to the black plastic frame by a weak adhesive. If you flex the plastic in one of the bottom corners AWAY from the screen, rather than trying to push the screen, it provides an easy starting point.

Now replace with the new screen! Make sure you put it in the right way up (speaking from experience here)...

Step 10: Scroll up!
Follow the steps in reverse order to reassemble.

Tip: If an error message pops up with: "Your Kindle is Broken, Please send to Amazon" or something similar, hold the Unlock button for 30 seconds.

Congratulations, you have just fixed your Kindle!

GREAT SUCCESS

Kindle Touch Repair Guides - Work in Progress

First project underway. Showing people how to take apart and replace the E-Ink screen from a variety of e-readers. Screens are made from glass and prone to cracking. Easy and cheap to fix them, if you know how, plus it saves a load on a load of electronic waste going to landfill.

The first e-reader disassembly - Kindle Touch

A variety of guides will be published - infographic JPEG for users who wish to view on their phone or tablet, a printable ebook (PDF) for those who prefer to print out the instructions, and a hands on disassembly video via Youtube.
All guides will be published under a Creative Commons ShareAlike License.
